• Too Much Bodie - Match Report by 'Big Mac' Ken McCartney

Baillou Plenty - Cuckoos 12

"Tis the season to be jolly". During the yuletide season, one is often reminded that it is better to give than to receive. Well, on Saturday, 22nd December, both Baillou and Cuckoos truly expressed the spirit of this yuletide season in a rugby matc hat the Winton Rugby Centre. Baillou giving and Cuckoos gladly receiving.

The match started out looking promising for Cuckoos, as they pressured Baillou with exciting scrummaging and good rucking, but were simply unable to cross the try line, thanks to pretty good tackling from Baillou and the iron hands of Cuckoos, who dropped several critical passes.

Twenty minutes into the match, Baillou caught Cuckoos walking through a “Winter Wonder Land” as Patrick Smith and Timmy Thompson took a quick line out ball and raced forty five metres for a try to take a 5-0 lead due to a missed conversion. Nevertheless, Cuckoos fought gallantly back, as Terrio gathered an up-and-under ball kicked by Jon Isaacs, ran almost forty metres, but nearing contact, did not disappoint or surprise anyone, as he simply threw the ball away turning a beautiful play into a sour one. Moment later, Baillou extended their lead to 12-0 on a Bodie long try and a Salabie conversion. Once again, Cuckoos fought back with good rucking and running most noticeably from Marcus Cheetham. Cheetham, however, failed to use the uniqueness of his physical stature and his pretty good running ability by simply not squaring up to punish tacklers but chose instead to side-step tacklers, making life easy for them.

<!–more–>

Nevertheless, the Baillou Boys showed signs of cracking to the Cuckoos pressure by committing errors that gave the Cuckoos an excellent opportunity to hit the score board fifteen metres from the line via a Baillou infringement. But once again, the iron hands of Cuckoos’ Andrew Love let them down, as he dropped a wide open pass.

Minutes later, Baillou again displayed signs of cracking to the Cuckoos pressure finding themselves offside, twenty metres out, almost in front of the post. But once again, they squandered away their excellent opportunity by knocking on the ball, a ball that they should not have run in the first instance. Common sense should have dictated that the Cuckoos should have gone for the 3 points, as the first half came to an end.

Feeling good about their chances to begin the second half, the Cuckoos, led by Mario ‘Soldier’ Rolle ran hard at the teeth of Baillou, who proved hard to handle. John Gates putting some good licks on people that resulted in Andrew Kemp hearing the early chimes of Christmas Bells. But something was just not right, as Brian Simms and Justin were not on the same page in loose play.

Fourteen minutes into the half, Charles Smith intercepted a pass from Timmy Thompson and laboured over the try line, thirty metres out to cut the Baillou lead to 12-7, lifting the spirits of the Cuckoos players. But as the game progressed, one could see a woople in the once powerful Cuckoos scrum. Twenty minutes into the half, however, Cuckoos were awarded a scrum on the Baillou ten metre line. The Cuckoos regained their powerful form and simply man-handled the Baillou scrum, reeling them back like a runaway train. But once again on the failure of just pressuring the ball down seeing that it was already over the try line proved to be the beginning of the end, something just wasn’t right on the day.

Brian Simms’ scrums simply don’t let opponents packs off the hook, scrums that have been the signature play of Cuckoos, sending cold messages that ‘we are your betters’/ Baillou in turn fed the Cuckoos a steady diet of Bodie, who simply gave the turtle soup-eating backs of the Cuckoos the tissick, making the final score ‘Plenty to 12’.

But surprisingly, there were some highlights. The value of Aaron Bethel, the effective ‘smash-mouth’ running of Mario Rolle, the toughness of Marvin Dames, the twinkle in the eye of young CR Walker student Kevin, when expressing the displeasure of his game, eager to practice to improve his skills, the firmness of vice-captain Rico, although he felt he did not get full support from the side-line, particularly from one always Scrooge looking Cuckoo during matches. But believe it or not, as for me, I did and will continue to support anyone that displays fairness.

The Cuckoos ‘Man of the Match’ must be Aaron Bethel, who absent from the pitch in the second half, highlighted his true value and must be treated accordingly in the future. Receiving an honourable mention is Andrew Bain for his all around hustle, and Jon Isaacs who displayed true rugby courage by coming back onto the pitch and playing after getting his head bust wide open.

‘Big Mac’ Kenneth McCartney is chairman of Cuckoos Rugby Club.
• Christmas Pounding

It is well known in the rugby community that Bahamas Rugby and Football Union (BRFU) members support each other in times of need.

In this light, the BRFU saw it fitting to stage its traditional Christmas tournament in memory of Paul Johnstone set for this Wednesday, December 26 at the Winton Rubgy Pitch, with all proceeds going towards Frank Johnson's medical expenses.

At least eight teams are expected to play in this Christmas tournament which is set to kick off at 12 noon with registration taking place at 11:00 a.m. The registration fee is $30 while the entrance fee stands at $3. According to BRFU executive Elystan Miles, this tournament will give BRFU team members a chance to play on different teams. The tournament will also give college students or rugby players living abroad a chance to participate.

"This tournament will be held in remembrance of Paul Johnstone, a great rugby player and even greater person. Each year the Johnstones present the winners of the tournament with a Paul Johnstone Trophy, a special moment every time. Our goal is to get eight teams out this year, we have a lot of young players to make up lots of teams, there is no club affiliation and mixing is encouraged. It's a chance to play with other rugby players instead of sticking with your regular teammates,"

said Miles. Matches played in this tournament will not count toward the win/loss record. The last regular season match of the year was played on the weekend between the Cuckoos and Baillou.

<!–more–>

Meanwhile, the win/loss standings in the Stella Artois Bahamas Cup and the SG Hambros Nassau Cup are in. The difference between the two Cup leagues are that all of the rugby teams in The Bahamas participate in the Bahamas Cup while only New Providence based teams play in the Nassau Cup.

The most recent standings in the Stella Artois Bahamas Cup has Freeport Rugby Club leading with an undefeated record in two matches and a total of eight points. Baillou is second at 1-0 with a total of three points, the Cuckoos third at 0-1 with no points, and Buccaneers fourth at 0-2 with no points.

Meanwhile, the standings in the SG Hambros Nassau Cup has Baillou first at 2-2 with 10 points, Cuckoos second with 10 points and a 3-0 record, the Buccaneers third at 0-2 with one point, and the Cracked Conchs fourth at 0-1 with no points. Baillou is in first place over the Cuckoos because the team won extra points from playing against the Cracked Conchs, a traveling master's team, according to Miles.

In related news, two Bahamians were named to the Rugby West Indies team which will compete at the International Rugby Board's (IRB) Sevens World Series tournament in San Diego in February 2008. The two Bahamians are Jeremico Cooper and Giovanni Rolle who will serve as one of the reserves.

This is Cooper's second time being named to the West Indies squad. The first time was two years ago. Last year Androsian Devon 'Dan' Woodside made the cut for the team. Kevin Salabie was the first Bahamian to be named to the prestigious West Indies team. Cooper and Rolle were named to the team based on their stellar performances at the recent North America and West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) Sevens tournament held at the Winton Rugby Pitch last month.

Source: Dahalia Smith, Nassau Guardian

 • Bahamas Cup - Freeport Stun Cuckoos

Freeport stun Cuckoos
44 – 13

Freeport visited Nassau for what was anticipated as a showdown of potential Bahamas Cup Champions!

A hard fought game was expected and this was the case after the first 20 minutes when Cuckoo’s larger forwards started to dominate the less experienced Freeport pack and with 5 minutes Cuckoo’s roared on by the Nassau crowd scored!
Many thought this was the end of Freeport but little did they know what was to come.
By the 24 minute Freeport scored a dazzling try by Gio Rolle and a conversation and penalty by Kasay Charlton draw the teams level at 13 – 13.
Just before half time George Walker scored his first try for Freeport with a slick centers move with Edwin Joseph and Freeport went into the half 20-13 ahead with another conversation by the ever maturing Kasey Charlton, who already looks a better player than his dad!

Freeport came out firing in the second half and played some champagne rugby with Perkins Joseph and Edwin Joseph seemingly breaking tackles and carving the Cuckoo’s to pieces at will and soon Gio Rolle and both Edwin and Perkins Joseph had scored superb tries and soon the crowd were cheering the Freeport play.
The pack found there groove with Ricardence Michels, Brad Culmer and Marco Surin all having personal best games. The other lead by Leon “not straight” Macphee gave the backs some majestic ball and the old hand John Lane made full use of this and again Gio Rolle sprinted over the line for another try!
By the time Cuckoo’s had realized what had happened the game was out of reach and out of sight and Freeport finished off with an amazing 44-13 win and topping the Bahamas Cup table going into the Christmas break!
MAN OF THE MATCH – MARCO SURIN

NEXT MATCH – THE BIG ONE!
